Justin Hughes and Erika Hayhurst were chosen as the November Students of the Month.
Justin Joseph Hughes is the son of Scott and Melinda Swiger of Lumberport. He is the grandson of Karen Marano.
During his four years at Lincoln High School, Justin has maintained a 4.0 GPA, been on the Perfect Honor Roll, and has received several Top Scholar Honors. Justin has taken two math classes through West Virginia University and is currently attending Fairmont State University classes at the Caperton Center. He has also qualified as a PROMISE Scholar.
Justin was inducted into the National Honor Society as a junior, is a four year member of the Key Club, and serves on the Yearbook Staff. While at Lincoln, he has been very active participating in Trick or Treat for UNICEF, Trunk or Treat at Halloween, fundraisers for Jack Rollins, Feed-a-Family, Angel Luv, and the annual Powder Puff Football game. Justin was also chosen to attend American Legion Boys State.
Justin is four-year member of the varsity football team and was a key player in the team advancing to the playoffs for the second straight year and winning Lincoln’s first ever playoff game. This year, Justin was named 1st Team All County, 1st Team Big 10, and All State Special Honorable Mention.
In his spare time, Justin enjoys motorcycle riding, weight lifting, and attending church. His future plans are to attend college and study engineering.
Erika Homba Hayhurst is the daughter of Leslie and Shiho Hayhurst of Lumberport. She is the granddaughter James and Nancy Hayhurst and Haruhiro and Katsuko Homba.
While at Lincoln High School, Erika has maintained over a 4.0 GPA, has consistently been on Perfect Honor Roll, and has been the recipient of several Top Scholar awards, as well as being a PROMISE Scholar. She also has taken two math classes through West Virginia University and is currently attending Fairmont State University classes at the Caperton Center.
Erika is an AP Scholar, secretary of the National Honor Society, and has taken home both 3rd and 5th place honors in the county Math Field Day competition in her freshman and senior years, respectively. Erika was also the secretary of her junior class. She is a member of the art club and was awarded an art scholarship from West Virginia Wesleyan College. Erika is a member of the Key Club and has participated in Trunk or Treat as well as helping place luminary bags at the Shinnston Cemetery. She has participated in the annual Powder Puff Football game all four years of high school.
Erika is a four year member of the Lincoln High School marching band serving on the drum line. She has also participated on the track team, where she has been a state qualifier each year.
Erika plans on attending college after high school and is undecided on a major.
