A very controversial topic inside the high school system is having an open campus lunch. There are many pros and cons to the concept regarding health, safety and responsibility.
By letting students out of school, it broadens their lunch choices and they can choose a healthier option or an unhealthy option.
There are many critics about the school lunch options and the health restrictions of what kids should and shouldn’t be able to eat. It places their well being in their hands and broadens their horizons. It allows them to have a break and choose things for themselves.
On the other hand, there’s a big debate within safety issues and students ending up hurt or in a place they shouldn’t be. It would be out the schools control, but within school hours and that is very controversial inside the school system, because safety is key.
Both a pro and a con is giving students the responsibility to learn about the way it will be outside of high school. A pro would be learning the way lunch would be handled in college and the workplace, but a con would be irresponsible students abusing the system and leaving for more time than they are trusted with or going somewhere they are not supposed to be.
Overall, it is a very big maturity issue and dealing with responsibility of students.
