Snooze, but Don't Lose

Do you think hitting the snooze button on your alarm is a good thing? Well, it’s really not.

The first time your alarm goes off, it means that you’re nearing the end of your REM cycle. REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement, which happens while you are in a deep sleep. When you hit the snooze button after already waking up once before, the next time you wake up you will feel more groggy and disoriented. Hitting the button will also make you feel more tired. The reason for this is because the alarm wakes you up in the middle of your REM instead of the end, like it usually would.

If you go to bed at a decent hour, your body will be ready to wake up at the same time that your alarm goes off.

There are also some consequences for doing this. Even if you sleep poorly for just one week, it messes up hundreds of genes in your body.

Three major consequences of the snooze button are: heightened stress, lowered immunity, and increased inflammation. If you feel these symptoms and keep hitting the snooze button, ask yourself these questions: 1. Are you getting enough sleep? 2. Are you exercising correctly? 3. Are you hyped up before bed? 4. Are you comfortable in your bedroom? 5. What are you eating right before you go to bed?

Even if you aren’t hitting the button but still feel drowsy, also ask yourself. If that doesn’t help, you might want to see a doctor because you might actually have insomnia.
