Last semester during the 2017-2018 school year, one Algebra II class took on a major project to help make LHS even better.
The project included the use of real-world math in the classroom, and made learning fun for the students!
Mr. Sharp, and his 1st Gold Algebra II class took on the project of building trash can bins for our school. They used the available materials of old bleacher boards to build them as an effective way to recycle material.
“The students had to design a bin that was functional and cost effective. They then took their design and applied carpentry and math techniques to actually create the bin. After they were built, the students stained them and painted the Cougar "C" on the side,” Mr. Sharp shared, giving us an insight on the steps his students had taken to create the bins.
The bins are useful, and can be found outside as you enter the school. Students who took part in the class enjoyed making them, and take a lot pride in their work!
When asked the reason behind his idea for this project, Mr. Sharp states: “There were several reasons for the project. First it brought real world math into the classroom. It also was a way to recycle materials we had (old bleacher boards) to create something useful for our school. Many students learned hands-on carpentry and math skills that were new to them.”
Mr. Sharp also states that he does, in fact, plan to do more projects like this one. “I'd like to build more trash can bins for the football field and also recycle some bleacher boards to create picnic tables for outside of the school for teachers and students to use,” he shared with us.
The students involved in the project did a wonderful job, and we thank them for their hard work! Our new trash bins really are a bright addition, and they bring a lovely sight to Lincoln High School!
Students involved in this project include: Tyler Minnix, Tyler Goff, Austin Earnest, Anthony Doctor, Shelby Mundell, Ashley Simms, Cameron Heston, Maggi Louk, Matt Hall, and Dillon Roach.
