On the night Jake Bowen became Bridgeport’s all-time rusher, the fact that the Indians had their best balanced offensive game of the season probably doesn’t bode well for future BHS playoff opponents. Bowen rushed for 163 yards and three touchdowns and quarterback Devin Vandergrift threw for 123 yards and three touchdowns on 4-of-7 passing to help lead the Class AA, No. 2 Indians to a 56-12 victory over Lincoln Friday night at Stydahar Field. Bowen’s 60-yard touchdown dash late in the first quarter pushed him past Steve Stout, who played for the Indians from 1971-73, as the school’s all-time leading rusher. After a Lincoln fumble gave the Indians the ball at the Cougars’ 39, the Indians quickly drove that distance in five plays, with Vandergrift hooking up with D’Andre Hallaway on a 12-yard TD pass for a 14-0 lead. But on the Cougars’ next possession, they drove 75 yards in 12 plays to cut the lead to 21-6. Colton Hovermale, who pounded out 125 yards on 28 carries, did the bulk of the work on the march, but it was Hunter Moore who capped it with a 1-yard plunge at the 9:07 mark of the second quarter. Lincoln then attempted an onsides kick, and kicker Pedro Rivas came up with the ball for the Cougars at the BHS 49. This time, it was the passing of David Tate which sparked the Cougars down the field. Tate completed 4-of-6 passes for 38 yards on the drive, which Moore again capped with a 1-yard run to make it 21-12 with 4:40 left in the first half. Lincoln ended the season at 4-6, while BHS will take a 9-1 record into the playoffs next week.
