Tanner Kennedy had a good all-around game with nine points, six steals, three rebounds and three assists and Gavin Kennedy scored eight for the Eagles (4-0). Payton Hawkins posted a double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds for Lincoln (1-1) and Zach Snyder added eight points. Jacob Kellar and Miles traded 3s to open play, then, after Hawkins’ stick-back gave Lincoln the lead back, RCB scored the next six points on a Tanner Kennedy hoop-and-harm and a Lucas triple. Layups by Ryan Leep tied the score again at 9, then a Tanner Kennedy 3 and a Snyder lay-in closed the quarter with RCB up one, 12-11. “Lincoln did a good job of getting us into their game,” RCB coach Bill Bennett said. “Consequently, we spent the whole night scrapping and fighting and trying to survive.” After an exchange of free throws, a Lucas 3 and a Logan Parsons jumper pushed RCB in front, 19-13, with 5:24 left in the quarter. But Lincoln countered with a 9-0 run as Braydon Johnson, Snyder and Hawkins converted layups with a Payton Moore 3 in between. Lucas’ mid-range jumper cut the Eagles’ deficit to one point, 22-21, heading to the half. Lincoln led, 26-23, at the 6:41 mark of the third quarter on back-to-back Hawkins hoops and were up again by three at 27-24, but then didn’t score for over five minutes. “We couldn’t execute on offense,” Toth said. “Our goal is 12 turnovers or under. If we had 12 or under, we’re right in there.” RCB took the lead on a pair of Gavin Kennedy free throws with 3:19 left in the quarter and extended it to four, 31-27, on a Tanner Kennedy free throw at the 1:38 mark. The Eagles led by two, 33-31, after three quarters. “I thought we did a great job defensively pretty much the entire night,” Toth said. “We’ve just got to get better individual skill against a man-to-man defense like that.” RCB scored the first seven points of the fourth period on layups by Lucas and Miles and a Blake Meighen 3 to lead by nine, 40-31, at the 5:43 mark. Ryan Vance and Gavin Kennedy traded baskets to maintain Byrd’s nine-point lead with 5:03 left and both teams did the majority of their scoring from the free throw line the rest of the way. Both teams are next in action on Tuesday: Lincoln hosts Elkins and RCB heads to East Fairmont.
