Natural Peer Helpers!

A group of 20 LHS students were selected to be a part of a state-wide initiative teaching students to help others.

Mental Health is a very serious issue today. Two teachers at Lincoln, Aaron Wolfe and Haleigh Wolfe, have realized this and taken control in becoming the Faculty Sponsors.

In December, two speakers spent a day training the group. They were taught to listen to what someone is asking for and to help others provide their own skills to problem solve. There are certain approaches that need to be taken when it comes to encouraging someone who is suffering from a mental illness.

Students took a pledge to make healthy choices, avoid self-defeating others, become more aware of the people around them, reach out to those who may need a friend, become a better listener, to not judge others, accept others, and to make school a better place for everyone.

Peer helpers learned more about suicide prevention and what they can do to help. This program taught them how to assess situations as a “problem”, “crisis”, or “emergency”. They also learned how to approach someone and talk about their problems. They got advice on the best way to refer a student to the proper place or location fit for them such as a guidance counselor, adult, and/or prevention resources.

Another training will be held this year. The Natural Peer Helpers will begin projects to build relationships and awareness about mental health.
