Interviewing Athlete Clayton Moore

Starting in Clarksburg, at the jr. wrestling club, Clayton began wrestling at 5 years old. From that point, his career in the sport took off. Along with a great love and passion. 10 years later, Moore began his freshman year of high school, which included the mark of his 10 year anniversary as a wrestler. During his freshman year, Clayton made the varsity team and made his way to the state tournament. Clayton shared his experience of his first year with us. “My freshman year experience was something I won’t forget, I had the best group of leaders that I could of ever asked for. As a freshman I really didn’t hold my expectations to high but my main goal was make it to the state tournament. As the months of grinding everyday and cutting the weight everyday from running extra after practice to making sure I eat what’s needed. I started out a rough start from getting sick and having problem making weight but I got over that and finished what needed to be done. For my first year at states, I felt nervous, anxious , and excited. Making it there was the goal I set at the beginning of my 8th grade year. I got there because of all the work I put in on the off season. From spending weekends at national tournaments and just traveling, while trying to get as many matches as possible, I knew what I had to do to get there and that’s what I did The biggest challenge I faced all year was definitely keeping weight and making sure I stayed in the right mind set. I was used to eating anything and everything I wanted until the season started. Then I had to cut back, practically living off of small salads and water; but, it’s a lifestyle you either love or hate. In this sport a big key is your mindset, as you never know what can happen out there on the mat. You have to take it all one step at a time and take every opponent like you were wrestling for a state title. As for my future, I’d love to wrestling in college! That has been my goal since I have started in this sport.” Clayton also gave great advice for other wrestlers, “No matter what size you are, you can strive in this sport. You just have to put the time and dedication into it. Work hard for what you want to achieve.” Clayton is an exceptional athlete, with a bright future ahead of him. Lincoln High School is very proud, and cant wait to see all he will accomplish in years to come.
